SRI Working Paper Series / Temporal Pressure of Place II
From Irritation to Inquiry
How Agency, Meaning, and Information Gain Reverse the Affective Value of an Unchanged Stimulus
Abstract
This working paper extends the concept of temporal pressure of place through a second field observation. A repetitive low-frequency impact in a hotel room initially produced irritation, vigilance, and a desire to escape. Once the event was reframed as an object of investigation, however, the physical stimulus remained while its affective value changed: the observer wanted additional repetitions in order to collect information. The transition was not from noise to silence, but from forced exposure to active inquiry. This paper proposes that the experienced burden of an environmental stimulus depends not only on regularity, salience, coupling, fluctuation, and disengagement difficulty, but also on agency, meaning, and expected information gain. Measurement did not merely describe the field; it altered the observer’s relationship to it. A subsequent room change removed the dominant sensation, providing a natural intervention that supported the field-dependence of the event. The paper develops a role-transition model—recipient, observer, experimenter, designer—and proposes testable hypotheses for architecture, media, healthcare, education, organizations, and field research.

1. Field Episode
The Same “Thump,” a Different Event
A low-frequency impact repeated through a hotel room at nearly constant intervals. At first, each recurrence was experienced as an intrusion. The interval between impacts became anticipatory time: attention waited for the next event, although the observer neither chose nor controlled it.
Analysis then began. Possible sources were compared. The relation between periodicity and irritation was considered. An iPhone accelerometer was used, first through a spectrum experiment and later through approximately five minutes of three-axis linear-acceleration recording. The physical stimulus did not immediately disappear. Yet the subjective stance changed.
The next impact was no longer only an interruption. It had become another sample.
The observer shifted from wanting the event to stop toward wanting enough additional events to identify its structure. Irritation did not simply vanish; it was partially converted into curiosity and information-seeking.
2. Central Hypothesis
The affective value of a stimulus is not fixed by its physical properties alone. It is co-produced by the relationship between field and individual. When a recurring event is unavoidable, meaningless, and externally imposed, its temporal regularity may be experienced as pressure. When the same event becomes relevant to a self-chosen question, every recurrence may carry expected information.
Inquiry can transform an imposed event into a voluntarily sampled event without first changing the event itself.
This is not a claim that interpretation can neutralize every harmful environment. Physical intensity, duration, health risk, and sleep disruption remain real. The claim is narrower: within tolerable limits, agency and information value can alter how an unchanged input is evaluated, attended to, and endured.
3. Extension of the Temporal-Pressure Model
The first paper represented physical-temporal pressure through regularity, event salience, coupling, fluctuation, and difficulty of disengagement. The present extension distinguishes physical-temporal capture from experienced burden.
- Be
- experienced burden or aversive value
- Pt
- temporal pressure generated by the recurring field
- U
- uncontrollability and involuntary exposure
- A
- agency: the capacity to choose a role, action, or mode of engagement
- M
- meaning: relevance of the event to a coherent question or goal
- Ig
- expected information gain from the next observation
This expression is a conceptual relation, not a validated psychophysical law. Its purpose is to make a specific prediction: when physical-temporal pressure remains stable, increasing agency, meaning, or expected information gain can reduce experienced burden and may even make further exposure temporarily desirable.
4. Role Transition
| Role | Relation to the stimulus | Meaning of the next event | Likely affect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recipient | Passive and externally timed | Another intrusion | Irritation, vigilance, helplessness |
| Observer | Attentive and differentiating | Confirmation that a pattern exists | Interest mixed with discomfort |
| Experimenter | Measures and compares conditions | A new sample that reduces uncertainty | Curiosity, task engagement |
| Designer | Introduces or evaluates intervention | Evidence about what changes the field | Agency, problem-solving orientation |
The transition does not require full control over the source. Even partial procedural control—selecting a sensor, choosing a measurement location, marking an event, comparing rooms—can create agency at the level of investigation. The individual may remain unable to stop the vibration while gaining control over how the vibration is encountered.
5. Measurement as an Intervention
Measurement is commonly treated as a neutral act performed after a phenomenon occurs. In human field research, this separation is incomplete. The act of measuring reorganizes attention. It divides a continuous discomfort into variables: interval, axis, amplitude, location, source, onset, and transmission path.
Once the stimulus is decomposed, the individual no longer receives only the total field. The individual actively samples dimensions of it. This creates at least three changes:
- Temporal change: waiting becomes scheduled observation.
- Semantic change: intrusion becomes evidence.
- Relational change: the individual moves from being acted upon to acting within the situation.
The sensor did not need to outperform the body in order to change the experience. It only needed to give the body a question it could pursue.
In the hotel episode, the iPhone did not isolate a decisive onset as clearly as human perception did. That apparent failure was itself informative: human multimodal sensitivity, local resonance, air-conducted low-frequency sound, bodily coupling, and the limits of point measurement became competing hypotheses.
6. Natural Intervention: Changing Rooms
The hotel moved the observer to another room. The dominant “thump” disappeared. In the corridor near the original room, the vibration remained perceptible, while the original room had produced the strongest experience.
This sequence functions as a natural intervention:
- The phenomenon extended beyond the individual and was detectable in the corridor.
- Its intensity depended on location.
- The original room likely transformed or amplified a building-level input through local structural or acoustic resonance.
- Changing the field changed the experience without requiring the individual to suppress sensitivity.
When the field produces the burden, changing the field may be more direct than correcting the individual.
The strongest practical intervention was not analysis, masking, or active cancellation. It was relocation. Analysis nevertheless changed the period before relocation from pure exposure into a productive observation phase.
7. Relation to Existing Research
Experimental research indicates that controllability can reduce the aversiveness of stressors and attenuate responses in threat-related brain regions. Research on pain similarly shows that control and expected control can alter perception. Curiosity research shows that uncertainty can increase the motivation to seek information, including information about negative outcomes. These findings support components of the present account.
The contribution proposed here is an integrative field model: an environmental rhythm first captures attention; a question then assigns information value to recurrence; measurement creates procedural agency; and intervention tests whether the phenomenon belongs to the individual, the field, or their coupling.
8. Testable Propositions
- For the same repetitive aversive stimulus, participants given an investigative task will report lower irritation and greater willingness to continue briefly than participants instructed only to tolerate it.
- Information gained from each recurrence will mediate the shift from avoidance toward approach.
- Procedural agency—choosing sensors, locations, or comparison conditions—will reduce experienced burden even when source control is unavailable.
- When repeated observations cease to provide new information, curiosity will decline and irritation will return.
- Relocation to a lower-coupling environment will reduce both physical-temporal pressure and experienced burden more reliably than cognitive reframing alone.
- Human detection may precede single-sensor detection when the event is distributed across audition, touch, vestibular sensation, bodily resonance, and temporal prediction.
9. Design Implications
| Domain | Passive condition | Agency-producing redesign |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Occupant receives unexplained vibration or noise | Expose patterns, source status, controls, and relocation options |
| Healthcare | Patient receives unexplained bodily events | Support safe observation, logging, comparison, and shared interpretation |
| Education | Learner receives a problem imposed from outside | Turn anomaly into a question the learner can investigate |
| Organizations | Worker receives recurring interruptions and deadlines | Make rhythms visible and allow participation in redesigning them |
| Media | User is captured by externally paced stimuli | Create visible pacing, stopping points, and meaningful control |
Agency should not be used to romanticize or normalize harmful conditions. A dangerous stimulus still requires removal. The design principle is to add legibility and choice while the source is being addressed—not to transfer responsibility from the environment to the exposed person.
10. Conclusion
The hotel vibration generated two different realities without first changing its physical pattern. As imposed repetition, it produced temporal pressure and irritation. As an unresolved phenomenon, it produced questions. As measured recurrence, it produced information. As a location-dependent event removed by changing rooms, it produced evidence about the field.
The stimulus remained a “thump.” What changed was whether the next “thump” represented intrusion or information.
This observation extends the concept of margin. Margin is not only freedom from external rhythm. It is also the freedom to change one’s relationship to that rhythm—to observe it, name it, measure it, intervene in it, and leave it. Inquiry does not erase the field’s power. It can, however, return part of that power to the individual.

- Be
- A
- Agency:
