There Is a Small Laboratory Inside the iPhone.
Beyond calls, cameras, and networks, the iPhone observes vibration, rotation, sound, light, pressure, and location. Inside its accelerometer, a microscopic mechanical structure is physically moving.
Observation: A Repetitive Impact in a Hotel Room
A low-frequency impact continued at nearly constant intervals in a hotel room: thump … thump … thump. The sound was not necessarily loud, yet its recurrence made it difficult to ignore. The body began to anticipate the next event.
The source was unknown—possibly a pump, fan, laundry machine, or another rotating system transmitted through the building. This raised a practical question:
Could the vibration be detected with an iPhone?
A sensor application was opened and the phone was placed on a desk. Three-axis acceleration began appearing as numerical data at approximately 100 samples per second. A consumer phone had become a field instrument within minutes of the initial observation.
Instrument: A Mechanical Structure in Silicon
The iPhone contains MEMS—micro-electro-mechanical systems. A simplified accelerometer can be imagined as a microscopic proof mass suspended by tiny springs. When the phone body accelerates, the mass momentarily lags because of inertia. That relative displacement changes the capacitance between microscopic electrodes and is converted into acceleration along the X, Y, and Z axes.
This is not merely a metaphor. A real mechanical structure is moving inside the semiconductor device.
Multiple Windows into the Physical World
| Sensor | Physical quantity | Possible field use |
|---|---|---|
| Accelerometer | Linear motion, impact, vibration, gravity direction | Vehicle vibration, building response, motion logging |
| Gyroscope | Angular velocity and rotation | Body mechanics, orientation, stabilization |
| Magnetometer | Earth’s field and local magnetic fields | Heading and electromagnetic-environment observations |
| Barometer | Atmospheric pressure | Elevation change, stairs, elevators |
| Microphone | Air-pressure vibration | Frequency, amplitude, resonance, machine sound |
| GPS | Position, speed, route | Mobile field logs and spatial mapping |
| LiDAR on selected models | Distance by light travel time | Spatial measurement and 3D capture |
Apple provides a seismometer sample application using motion sensors. The free application phyphox can display and export readings from accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers, barometers, and microphones.
Finding: The Body Detected What a Single Sensor Did Not Clearly Isolate
Approximately five minutes of three-axis linear acceleration were recorded. Human perception clearly noticed that the impacts had become prominent later in the recording, while the phone on the desk showed only a small change in overall vibration.
This discrepancy generated new hypotheses. The desk may have been mechanically isolated from the strongest path. Air-conducted low-frequency sound may have mattered more than desk vibration. The bed, floor, walls, or the human body itself may have acted as local resonators. Human perception also integrated audition, touch, vestibular input, muscular tension, and temporal prediction—while the phone measured acceleration at only one point.
The body discovered the anomaly. The iPhone decomposed physical variables. Analysis turned the gap between them into a question.
Intervention and Outcome
The hotel moved the observer to another room, where the dominant impact disappeared. The vibration remained perceptible in the corridor near the original room and had been strongest inside that room. The event was therefore likely field-dependent: a building-level input may have been locally transformed or amplified by structural or acoustic resonance.
The episode became a compact research cycle:
Specialized instruments remain necessary for calibrated engineering measurements. Yet for comparison, exploration, and hypothesis generation, an iPhone can function as a portable field laboratory.
The world is already a laboratory, and its smallest observation station may already be in our pocket.

iPhoneの中には、MEMS(Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems)と呼ばれる微小な機械構造が入っている。
